Anime Girl was born as an attempt to rescue my identity. People used to call me an anime puppet, anime freak, anime pervert—trying to insult me. In Latin America they call us “frikis”, though we’ve since made it ours.
I grew up in the Dominican Republic. My education there mainly consisted of going to Catholic schools where I wasn’t allowed to wear pants (no joke), parents who thought “reading too much” would distract me from getting a husband (a Latina woman’s ultimate goal in life), and listening to people in the media call video games and rock music “satanic”. Anime was considered a gateway to hell—and there I was trying to get the school choir to learn “One Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy VII (hint: it did not fly). Girls like me weren’t considered “quirky”—we were considered a threat to society. And for a very long time, I let it get to me. I tried to be a “good girl”, la niña buena. Not anymore.
The ironic part? After years of trying to “correct me” and turn me into something I’m not (It’s a whole other story but let’s just say I escaped the “Latina Teen Idol” stereotype factory… barely) I moved to NYC on my own to start fresh and take my life back. I told myself, never again would I pretend to be someone I’m not.
Fast-forward to now: I’m a YouTube host and writer for an anime channel! I talk about anime at conventions and podcasts and radio shows. I’m developing a web-comic series & writing an anime-related memoir, and I’m performing music at anime-themed events! (Catch the upcoming Sailor Boom Party Oct. 10 — Details to be announced soon!)
I make a living from being exactly what people told me not to be! A weeb, freak, geek, fangirl... an Anime Girl!
My approach these days to anyone who ever tries to shame me for something I LOVE is to LEVEL DA F*CK UP about it. Hell yeah I’m an anime freak and proud! I know I’m Latina, not made in Japan, a la mierda ONE PUNCH IT, I don’t give a damn! Anime is what I grew up with, it’s as much a part of my culture and heritage as bachata, merengue, video games and Star Wars. #GeekLife
